Top House Republican wants Vivek Ramaswamy to take JD Vance’s Senate seat
One potential Senate race for the 2024 election is already being closely watched by many in the Republican party. Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., has expressed his support for former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to replace Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, if both Vance and former President Trump win the upcoming election.
Banks spoke highly of Ramaswamy, stating, “I hope Vivek is Governor DeWine’s choice. I mean, he’d be a great senator if he wants it.” However, Banks made it clear that he is not involved in Ohio politics, leaving the decision ultimately in the hands of Ohio’s governor.
Former President Trump recently announced that he would choose JD Vance as his running mate, stirring up excitement and anticipation within the GOP. Banks, who is also vying for an open Senate seat in Indiana, praised Trump’s choice and emphasized Vance’s alignment with the movement Trump has cultivated within the party.
According to Banks, Vance’s populist approach to politics could resonate with swing state voters in crucial states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Vance’s ability to connect with working-class families is seen as a valuable asset in the quest to secure victory in the November election.
As discussions around potential Senate vacancies intensify, Banks suggested that Ramaswamy could step in to fill Vance’s position if needed. If Trump emerges victorious over President Biden, the responsibility of appointing Vance’s replacement would fall to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.
Among the names being floated as contenders for the Senate seat are Rep. Mike Carey, R-Ohio, a figure with close ties to both Trump and DeWine, as well as state Sen. Matt Dolan, who received DeWine’s endorsement in the Republican primary against Vance.
It remains to be seen how the political landscape will evolve leading up to the 2024 election, but the race for this Senate seat promises to be one to watch. Stay tuned for more updates and developments on this unfolding story.
