Trump accuses Manhattan judge of election interference for ruling against him
Former President Trump’s legal battles continue as he accuses the judge overseeing his trial in Manhattan of tampering with the 2024 election. The 45th president alleges that his constitutional right to free speech has been violated due to a gag order imposed on him. Trump expressed his frustration on the Truth Social platform, claiming to be the only presidential candidate in history to be silenced in this manner. He boldly declared that the whole trial is rigged, and the judge’s actions amount to election interference.
The controversy arose when Judge Juan Merchan ruled that Trump had violated the gag order multiple times by discussing witnesses and court officials’ families on social media. Each violation incurred a $1,000 fine, totaling $9,000 in penalties for the former president. Despite his objections, Trump removed the offending posts from his account following the ruling.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office had previously accused Trump of breaching the gag order on 14 occasions since it was put in place. Judge Merchan warned that continued violations could lead to more severe consequences, including potential incarceration.
Trump has vehemently critiqued the gag order, labeling it as unconstitutional and hindering his ability to defend himself in the case. He condemned the trial as a sham orchestrated by the current administration and expressed frustration with being unable to address the accusations made against him.
In a bid to challenge the judge’s decisions, Trump called for Merchan’s recusal from the case, citing conflicts of interest. He argued that the judge’s familial ties to Democratic politicians render him biased and incapable of delivering fair judgments.
Merchan, in his ruling, expressed regret over the constraint of being unable to impose larger fines on Trump due to legal limitations. He hinted at the possibility of more severe penalties, including imprisonment, if the violations persist. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the charges Trump faces, relating to falsifying business records.
The trial revolves around allegations concerning Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, and the hush money paid to Stormy Daniels, a former adult film star, to conceal an alleged affair with Trump. Prosecutors claim that the Trump Organization unlawfully reimbursed Cohen for the payment and misrepresented it as a legitimate expense. The case aims to prove Trump’s involvement in fraudulent activities, including the falsification of records to conceal criminal acts.
