Trump and Vance say Biden cannot finish his term.
Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), recently sat down for an interview with Fox News, where they discussed the Democrats’ push for President Joe Biden to leave the race, calling it a “coup” and arguing that he legally cannot finish out his term.
During the interview, host Jesse Watters asked Trump and Vance whether they believed Democrats were orchestrating a “coup against Joe Biden” to remove him from the race, to which Trump responded, “Sort of.” Vance then chimed in, agreeing with Trump’s sentiment and pointing out that the Constitution prohibits Biden from completing his term if he is unable to run for president.
Vance emphasized that if there are concerns about Biden’s mental capacity to serve as president, the 25th Amendment should be invoked. This amendment allows the vice president and a majority of Cabinet members to declare the president “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” empowering the vice president to step in and fulfill the president’s responsibilities.
While Democrats did express worries about Biden’s ability to conduct a successful campaign following a lackluster debate performance against Trump, there have been no public assertions that he is “mentally incapable” of fulfilling his term. The calls for Biden to drop out primarily revolved around his declining poll numbers.
Trump alleged that there has been a concerted effort to deceive the American people regarding Biden’s mental and physical fitness.
“Look, you had people that lied to the American public,” Trump asserted. “And I tell you what. You ought to take a look at his doctors because his doctors keep giving him this wonderful report.”
Despite Biden announcing the suspension of his campaign, paving the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the new nominee, Trump continued to attack Biden on social media, claiming, “Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was!”
