Trump stays quiet about Mark Robinson’s scandal as candidate’s campaign in North Carolina collapses.
Mark Robinson, the Republican lieutenant governor of North Carolina and potential gubernatorial candidate, has found himself at the center of a scandal that could damage his political aspirations. Despite previous praise from former President Donald Trump, Robinson now faces backlash over lewd and controversial comments he allegedly made on a pornography website’s message board over a decade ago.
According to a report by CNN, Robinson’s past comments include referring to himself as a “black NAZI!” and expressing support for reinstating slavery. Despite these inflammatory remarks, Robinson denied making the comments, which were attributed to a username linked to him. In a video posted on social media, Robinson dismissed the allegations as an attempt to distract from the substantive issues in the election.
However, the fallout from the report has been significant. A planned GOP fundraiser for Robinson was canceled, and several campaign staffers, including his campaign manager, resigned. The Republican Governors Association also announced that they would not provide additional support to Robinson’s campaign leading up to Election Day.
Former President Trump, who had previously endorsed Robinson, notably avoided mentioning him during a recent rally in North Carolina. Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, evaded questions about Robinson’s comments during a campaign event in Charlotte, emphasizing that it was up to Robinson to address the allegations with voters.
Prior to the scandal, Trump had lauded Robinson as a rising star within the Republican Party, even going so far as to compare him to civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. At the North Carolina Republican Party’s convention last year, Trump announced his endorsement of Robinson, describing him as a standout figure in politics.
Meanwhile, Robinson’s Democratic opponent, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, seized on the controversy to criticize Robinson’s fitness for office. Stein labeled Robinson as “absolutely unfit” for any elected position, let alone the governorship.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign has also capitalized on Trump’s previous support for Robinson, framing the two as interconnected in the battleground state of North Carolina. In a memo, the Harris campaign suggested that the fate of Robinson and Trump in North Carolina are intertwined.
As the scandal continues to unfold, Robinson’s political future hangs in the balance. With the allegations casting a shadow over his campaign, Robinson faces the daunting task of winning over voters amidst mounting scrutiny and criticism.
