Trump-supported candidate wins primary in conservative state despite division in House Freedom Caucus.

Rep. William Timmons, R-S.C., successfully defended his seat in a closely contested primary against State Rep. Adam Morgan, a conservative challenger that split the House Freedom Caucus.

The battle for South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, encompassing Greenville and Spartanburg, saw prominent members of the House Freedom Caucus divided on who should represent the solidly Republican region.

Former President Donald Trump threw his support behind Timmons, alongside conservative stalwarts like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Byron Donalds, and Jim Jordan. On the other side, Morgan garnered endorsements from Florida’s Matt Gaetz and House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good. Morgan leads the South Carolina legislature’s iteration of the Freedom Caucus.

In terms of fundraising, Timmons significantly outpaced Morgan, amassing $2.4 million compared to Morgan’s $578,000. Both candidates emphasized their commitment to prioritizing border security if elected.

Timmons, speaking on the issue, highlighted the urgency of securing the southern border, stating, “Over 10 million people have crossed the southern border illegally in the last 3½ years. It’s unacceptable. We have to change course. Our country can’t sustain it,” as reported by Fox affiliate WSPA.

Looking towards the general election on Nov. 5, Timmons will be pitted against Democrat Kathryn Harvey and Constitution Party nominee Mark Hackett. In the previous general election in 2022, Timmons overwhelmingly secured victory with 90.8% of the vote.
