Trump supports former military members running for Congress to change seats from Democrat to Republican
Former President Trump recently endorsed two Republican House candidates who are former military personnel seeking to flip Democrat-held seats in the upcoming fall elections. Derrick Anderson, a former U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret, and Laurie Buckhout, a former Army colonel, received Trump’s endorsement following his debate against President Biden.
In his endorsement of Anderson, the Republican nominee for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, Trump praised Anderson’s service as a Green Beret who was deployed to various countries in the Middle East. Trump highlighted Anderson’s dedication to America First policies and criticized his opponent, Yevgeny ‘Eugene’ Vindman, for his role in the Ukraine Impeachment Hoax.
Anderson is challenging Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat seeking the gubernatorial nomination in Virginia in 2025. Trump expressed his full support for Anderson, emphasizing his military experience and commitment to serving the country. Anderson, who served in the Army before running for Congress, aims to unseat Spanberger, a former CIA operative who narrowly won against a Republican opponent in the previous election.
On the other hand, Laurie Buckhout, the Republican nominee for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, received Trump’s endorsement for her military service and commitment to conservative values. Buckhout, a retired Army colonel with 26 years of service, is challenging incumbent Rep. Don Davis, a Democrat whose policies she criticizes as detrimental to the district.
Trump’s endorsement of Buckhout praised her dedication to growing the economy, securing the border, and supporting military veterans. Buckhout, who emerged victorious in the primary against a sole challenger, will face Davis in the general election.
Both Anderson and Buckhout represent a new wave of Republican candidates with military backgrounds seeking to bring their service-oriented ethos to Congress. Trump’s endorsement signals his support for their platforms and the broader effort to flip Democrat-held seats to Republican control in the upcoming elections.
As the campaign season unfolds, the races in Virginia and North Carolina will serve as battlegrounds where the clash of ideologies and visions for the future of the country will play out. Voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to continue with the current Democratic representation or shift towards a new direction advocated by candidates like Anderson and Buckhout.
