Trump thinks Arizona’s old abortion law is too strict.

Former President Donald Trump expressed his views on abortion laws, stating that the Arizona law from 1864 that outlaws nearly all abortions goes too far. Despite this, he praised the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the constitutional right to abortion. The Arizona Supreme Court recently ruled that the Civil War-era ban on abortions may be enforced, allowing them only in cases where the mother’s life is at risk with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Trump, during a press appearance in Atlanta, mentioned that he believes state lawmakers in Arizona will work to amend this archaic ban. He highlighted the importance of states’ rights and expressed confidence that the governor and other officials will take prompt action to address the issue.

The contentious topic of abortion remains a central issue in the upcoming 2024 election. Democrats hope that the 2022 Supreme Court ruling, spearheaded by three justices appointed by Trump, will mobilize voters who support abortion rights. Michael Tyler, a spokesperson for President Biden’s 2024 campaign, criticized Trump for his stance on abortion, accusing him of causing suffering and chaos in Arizona.

Recent reports indicate that Trump has refrained from endorsing a federal abortion ban, opting instead to leave the decision to individual states through voting or legislation. He emphasized the importance of allowing the states to determine their stance on abortion access, an approach he believes aligns with the will of the people.

Trump commended the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, referring to it as an “incredible achievement.” Notably, the three justices appointed by the former president, Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, played pivotal roles in ending the constitutional right to abortion.

In Arizona, an old law from 1864 takes precedence over a more recent legislation enacted in 2022 that limits abortions after 15 weeks. Despite this, abortion rights advocates are actively working to introduce an initiative in November that would establish a fundamental right to abortion until viability, generally around 22 to 24 weeks into pregnancy.

Arizona for Abortion Access, a group spearheading the initiative, announced that it had gathered enough signatures to qualify the measure for the November ballot, showcasing ongoing efforts to secure and protect abortion rights.
