Trump to accept GOP nomination amid assassination threat on RNC Day 4
Former President Donald Trump is set to formally accept the GOP’s presidential nomination on the fourth and final day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. This comes in the wake of an attack on his life that is expected to cast a shadow over his address.
In an interview with the Washington Examiner after the attempt on his life, Trump mentioned that the speech he had planned to give on Thursday was going to be memorable, saying that it would have been one of the most incredible speeches criticizing the Biden administration. However, Trump acknowledged that the recent events have completely altered the course of his planned address.
Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump mentioned on “CBS Mornings” that Americans may witness a different side of Trump in his speech on Thursday night. She noted that her father-in-law was significantly affected by the recent events, suggesting that the audience might see a softer version of Trump than they have seen in the past.
The focus of Day 4 of the Republican National Convention is on the former president’s vision for the country in the event of his re-election, under the theme “Make America Great Once Again.” This stands as the culmination of a week where GOP delegates, governors, lawmakers, and party faithfuls have been exposed to Trump’s agenda on various fronts like the economy, foreign policy, and public safety.
At the onset of the week, convention delegates endorsed the GOP’s 16-page platform, which bore heavy influence from Trump. This was followed by a roll call vote of state delegations officially nominating Trump for president, signifying the conclusion of the primary process which began months ago.
Earlier in the week, Trump declared Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate, with delegates formally nominating him for the vice president position.
A major focus of the week has been projecting unity within the Republican ranks following the attack on Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Throughout the convention, the former president appeared with a white bandage over his ear, indicating where the bullet grazed him. Some attendees even opted to wear imitation bandages over their ears in solidarity.
Among the lineup of speakers who applauded Trump during the convention were governors, members of Congress, and Senate hopefuls, including past rivals in the GOP primary race like former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.
Vance, who is 39 years old, formally accepted the vice presidential nomination in his speech on Wednesday night, remarking that President Trump embodies America’s last hope to restore a country where even a working-class individual can rise to the position of vice president.
The highlight on the agenda for Day 4 of the Republican National Convention is Trump’s speech where he will accept the Republican presidential nomination. It is anticipated that he will be the final speaker before the convention concludes.
The theme for the final day, “Make America Great Once Again,” will delve into Trump’s plans to usher in a new era for America. The Republican National Committee emphasized that Trump’s agenda is geared towards fortifying America’s position both domestically and internationally, ensuring prosperity and safety for American families, and sparking a renewal in cities and communities.
The day’s official session will commence at 5:45 CT or 6:45 ET and is set to conclude at 10:30 p.m. CT or 11:30 p.m. ET. For a detailed itinerary of events in Milwaukee, viewers can refer to the RNC’s master calendar on their website.
Among the speakers slated to address the convention are Senator Steve Daines of Montana, who heads the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and Representative Richard Hudson, chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Additionally, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Small Business Administrator Linda McMahon, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, wrestler Hulk Hogan, and Alina Habba, Trump’s attorney, are scheduled to deliver remarks. The lineup also includes Franklin Graham, Eric Trump, Dana White, and others.
CBS television stations will provide coverage of the convention starting at 10 p.m. ET each day. For those without cable, CBS News 24/7 will offer continuous coverage of the convention and will stream the keynote speeches each night on mobile and streaming devices.
