Trump will participate in Fox debate, Harris choosing ABC debate.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has agreed to an offer from Fox News to hold a debate with presumptive Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, as reported. However, the Harris campaign remains firm on sticking to the original plan for a debate with ABC News.
In a social media post, former President Trump announced that the purported Fox News debate with Harris would take place on September 4th.
“I have agreed with Fox News to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th. The debate was previously scheduled against Sleepy Joe Biden on ABC but has been terminated as Biden is no longer participating, and I am in litigation against ABC Network and George Slopadopoulos, thus creating a conflict of interest,” Trump stated.
Trump further mentioned that the debate would be held in Pennsylvania at a location yet to be determined. The moderators of the debate are said to be Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, with rules similar to Trump’s previous debate with Biden.
On the other hand, Harris’ campaign responded by accusing Trump of running scared and attempting to evade the previously agreed-upon debate with ABC News.
“He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on September 10th,” Michael Tyler, the Harris campaign communication director, stated. “The Vice President will be there, one way or the other, to take the opportunity to speak to a prime-time national audience.”
The campaign expressed openness to discussing further debates but only after the initially agreed-upon debate on September 10th takes place.
“Mr. Anytime, anywhere, anyplace should have no problem with that unless he’s too scared to show up on the 10th,” Tyler added.
CBS News reached out to Fox News for comment, but there has been no response as yet.
Trump and President Biden had previously agreed to participate in two presidential debates, with the first hosted by CNN in June and the second scheduled for September 10th, to be hosted by ABC News.
In past months, Harris accused Trump of backing out of his initial commitment to the September 10th debate, stating, “I’m ready.”
After Mr. Biden’s exit from the race, Harris announced her candidacy and has since garnered the majority of delegates needed to secure the Democratic nomination. The Democratic National Convention is scheduled to take place from August 19-22 in Chicago.
Recently, a majority of Democratic delegates voted to elect Harris as the party’s nominee for president in a virtual roll call vote, solidifying her position at the top of the ticket for the upcoming November elections.
