Trump’s lawyers will ask a court to dismiss the judgment in the E. Jean Carroll case.
Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, is facing legal battles after being ordered to pay $83 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamation. This case is just one of two in which Trump has been found liable for defamation and sexual abuse allegations brought forth by Carroll.
In a trial held in May of 2023, a unanimous federal jury heard evidence regarding Carroll’s claim that Trump sexually abused her in a department store dressing room in the 1990s and defamed her when she disclosed this incident in 2019. Following this trial, the jury awarded Carroll more than $88 million in damages.
In a separate trial in January of the same year, another federal jury ordered Trump to pay $83 million to Carroll for additional accusations of defamation. Trump’s legal team is now appealing the first judgment, arguing that the judge made unfair evidentiary rulings, particularly by allowing two of Carroll’s friends to testify. These friends claimed that Carroll confided in them about the alleged attack back in the 1990s, which Trump denies.
Furthermore, Trump’s lawyers contend that two other women who testified about similar abuse by Trump, Jessica Leeds and Natasha Stoynoff, should not have been allowed on the stand. Carroll’s attorneys, however, dismissed Trump’s appeal as an attempt to get a second chance with baseless claims of errors and unfairness.
During the appeal hearing, Trump’s legal team will have 10 minutes to present their argument to a panel of three judges appointed by former Democratic Presidents Obama and Clinton. Carroll’s attorney will also have the same amount of time to make their case.
These legal battles reflect the ongoing controversies surrounding Trump’s conduct and the allegations of sexual abuse and defamation made against him. The outcome of these appeals will undoubtedly have significant implications for both Trump and Carroll, as well as broader discussions about accountability and justice in cases of alleged misconduct by public figures.
