Universal and Meta team up for more social music opportunities.

Universal Music Group and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, have joined forces to enhance social music experiences for artists and songwriters on Meta’s various platforms. This expanded agreement, announced on August 12th, encompasses Meta platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Horizon, Threads, and for the first time, WhatsApp.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but both parties have emphasized that artists and songwriters will be fairly compensated under this partnership. Additionally, Meta and UMG will collaborate to address issues related to unauthorized AI-generated content that could impact music creators.

UMG has been actively involved in tackling the challenges posed by AI in the music industry, partnering with YouTube on AI principles and an AI Music Incubator, forming ethical practices with BandLab, and working with Endel on functional music. This proactive approach demonstrates UMG’s commitment to protecting artists from potentially harmful AI applications.

The renewed partnership between Meta and UMG signifies a positive turn in their relationship, which had been somewhat strained in the past. By recognizing the power of music to connect people, this collaboration aims to bring fans, artists, and songwriters closer together across various platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and now WhatsApp.

Tamara Hrivnak, VP of Music and Content Business Development at Meta, expressed gratitude towards the Universal team and highlighted the potential for music to foster engagement and interactions in new ways. Michael Nash, Chief Digital Officer & EVP of Universal Music Group, praised Meta for its continuous support of artists and songwriters, emphasizing the role of music in driving conversations and engagement on a global scale.

Over recent months, Meta and UMG have worked together on impactful campaign launches for artists like Billie Eilish, Karol G, and Taylor Swift, showcasing the collaborative potential of their partnership. As they look towards the future, both parties are committed to leveraging the reach and influence of Meta’s platforms to create innovative opportunities for music creators worldwide.
