US officials upset China by visiting Dalai Lama in India
The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, met with a bipartisan United States congressional delegation at his residence in India’s Dharamshala. This encounter has ignited disapproval from China, which considers the Dalai Lama a separatist threat. The meeting took place amidst the backdrop of reinitiated discussions between Washington and Beijing, following a period of strained relations catalyzed by the previous administration’s tariffs on Chinese goods, exacerbated further by the global pandemic and escalating tensions in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.
Leading the delegation was Republican Rep. Michael McCaul, joined by Democratic former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China has refused to engage in dialogue with Dalai Lama representatives since 2010, dismissing the Tibetan government-in-exile.
Despite China’s objections, the U.S. lawmakers made a public appearance alongside the Dalai Lama, voicing their support for the Resolve Tibet Act recently passed by Congress. This legislation aims to facilitate talks between the Dalai Lama and Chinese authorities, with the ultimate goal of reaching a peaceful resolution. The bill now awaits President Joe Biden’s signature to become law, signaling a clear stance on Tibet’s freedom.
During the gathering, Pelosi and McCaul affirmed American backing for Tibetan self-determination, underscoring the importance of their visit despite warnings from the Chinese Communist Party. Beijing swiftly condemned the delegation’s actions, cautioning the U.S. against endorsing Tibetan independence and threatening repercussions if the bill is signed into law. Historically, the Dalai Lama has engaged with U.S. leaders, forging connections with presidents spanning multiple administrations. However, he has yet to meet with President Biden since he assumed office.
