Waters upset after Biden resignation, not told in advance
Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California recently revealed her surprise over President Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential campaign. Speaking to Politico, Waters expressed her initial shock at waking up to the news on television, feeling angry about the abrupt change.
Waters spoke about the hard work put into supporting Biden staying in the race and the suddenness of his resignation. Despite her initial anger, Waters found solace in Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, which she described as a positive outcome.
Having been a staunch defender of Biden, especially following his lackluster performance in the first presidential debate, Waters continued to show her unwavering support for him. She adamantly opposed any idea of replacing him with a different Democratic candidate, emphasizing that she believes in Biden’s capabilities and has witnessed his best moments.
While firmly standing behind Biden, Waters has also been a vocal advocate for Harris, whom she considers a friend. The congresswoman expressed her endorsement of Harris without hesitation, foreseeing challenges that await the vice president, particularly from Trump supporters and those who may seek to undermine her candidacy based on her gender and race.
In the wake of Biden’s announcement, Harris has been breaking fundraising records in her race against former President Trump, showcasing the strong support she has garnered within the Democratic party.
President Biden is scheduled to address the nation on Wednesday to explain his decision to withdraw from the 2024 campaign and outline his priorities for the remainder of his first term. The Oval Office address is expected to shed light on Biden’s reasons for stepping back and his plans moving forward.
After six days out of the public eye, Biden reemerged on Tuesday at Dover Air Force Base as he returned to Washington, D.C. from his residence in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The president’s forthcoming address is anticipated to provide insight into the future direction of his administration and the key issues he intends to focus on in the coming months.
