Well-known Democrat says voters have been expressing concerns about Biden for months.
Former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau has been vocal about the concerns voters have been expressing regarding President Biden’s re-election bid. Favreau argued that these concerns have been raised consistently over the past few months, despite Biden’s resistance to the idea of stepping down.
In a post on X, Favreau refuted Biden’s assertion that calls for his withdrawal are exclusively coming from “elite” sources. He referenced a pre-debate poll conducted by the New York Times/Siena College, which revealed that 64% of all voters wanted Biden replaced on the Democratic ticket. Surprisingly, even 48% of individuals intending to vote for Biden expressed the desire for a replacement. Moreover, a staggering 69% of the electorate believes that Biden’s age significantly hinders his effectiveness as a president.
Favreau emphasized, “This is not an elite thing. This is not a media thing. This is not a one-bad-debate-freakout thing. The voters have been voicing these concerns for months now. Denying or dismissing them is not the way to address them.”
Favreau, a prominent figure on Pod Save America, also highlighted that 55% of Black voters and 66% of Hispanic voters share the sentiment of replacing Biden as the Democratic nominee.
The situation escalated when Biden made a surprise appearance on MSNBC, challenging fellow Democrats to contest his candidacy for the nomination. He brushed off the widespread calls for him to withdraw from the presidential race, stating, “I’m getting frustrated by the elites – not you guys – the elites in the party, oh, they know so much more. Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention.”
Following this, Biden penned a letter to congressional Democrats, urging them to cease questioning his commitment to the re-election bid. He emphasized the need for the party to unite and focus on defeating former President Trump in their 2024 election rematch.
Biden reiterated in the letter his unwavering dedication to continue in the race, asserting that any doubts about his candidacy would only serve to benefit Trump and harm the Democratic party’s chances of success.
