White House promotes new immigration policy for spouses of American citizens without papers.

President Biden has made a bold move with less than five months until the general election by announcing sweeping federal action that will provide a new path to permanent residency for undocumented spouses of American citizens who have lived in the United States for at least 10 years. This plan aims to extend legal citizenship not only to around 500,000 qualifying spouses but also to roughly 50,000 children, protecting them from deportation in the process.

In an exclusive interview with CBS News, Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez emphasized the importance of the president’s actions in fighting for issues that are significant to communities and their families. She stated, “For families who are eligible for this new executive order, they will be able to sleep better tonight, knowing that they have an opportunity to help ensure that they are not separated by cruel policies.”

Chávez Rodríguez also highlighted the difference between the Biden administration’s approach and that of former president Donald Trump, describing Trump’s family separation policies as “extremely cruel and chaotic.” Trump, in turn, criticized the new immigration policy during a rally in Racine, Wisconsin, calling it “lawless executive action.” He falsely claimed that Biden would grant mass amnesty to millions of illegal aliens and suggested that some of them might vote for him.

Despite Trump’s efforts to appeal to Latino voters, recent polling data indicates a decrease in Biden’s support among this demographic since the 2020 election. While Trump may not secure the majority of the Latino vote in November, there is speculation about the impact of a Hispanic vice presidential candidate on his campaign. Some allies believe that selecting a Latino running mate could help sway Latino support and secure battleground states like Nevada and Arizona. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida has emerged as a leading contender on Trump’s shortlist for a running mate, alongside other Republicans.

However, Chávez Rodríguez remains unconcerned about the potential influence of a Latino vice presidential candidate on the Republican ticket. She stated, “I don’t think that there’s any one individual or any one thing that anyone can do, including Donald Trump or his campaign, that will hide the fact that he despises my community.”
