White House remains strongly committed to supporting Israel, despite delays in military aid
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering support for Israel despite recent reports of a temporary hold on an ammunition shipment. The Axios report, citing two Israeli officials, revealed that a U.S.-manufactured ammunition delivery to Israel was halted, causing confusion within the Israeli government.
During a press briefing, Jean-Pierre faced questions about this development, with Senator Heinrich questioning the apparent discrepancy between the Biden administration’s actions and its statements of support for Israel. In response, Jean-Pierre emphasized that the U.S.’ commitment to Israel’s security remains steadfast and pointed to the recent passage of a $95 billion aid package in the Senate that includes assistance for both Ukraine and Israel.
When pressed on the topic of arms sales to Israel, Jean-Pierre chose not to comment. However, she underscored the importance of ensuring humanitarian aid reaches various regions in need, including Gaza, Sudan, Haiti, and other parts of the world.
President Biden, in a separate address on the same day, condemned antisemitism on college campuses and globally, particularly following the October 7 attack in Israel by Hamas terrorists. The attack resulted in significant casualties and hostage situations. Israel’s subsequent actions in the Gaza Strip, according to estimates from the Hamas-run health ministry, have led to a considerable number of Palestinian deaths.
Despite tensions and strained relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Biden reiterated his support for Israel’s efforts against Hamas. This declaration comes amid concerns over Israel’s proposed invasion of Rafah, a move that could exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.
As the situation continues to evolve, the White House remains committed to navigating these complex challenges and upholding its alliances in the region. The Associated Press has contributed to the coverage of these developments, shedding light on the multifaceted dynamics at play in the Israel-U.S. relationship.
